As Theodore Roosevelt wisely said, “Courtesy is as much a mark of a gentleman as courage.” Being a gentleman goes beyond knowing the rules; it’s about an inherent thoughtfulness and respect for others, particularly women. ‘Thank You, Kind Sir’ Chivalry isn’t sexist, nor is it dead. Open the door for your lady (in fact, you should do this regardless of gender), pull out her chair at a restaurant, help her with her bags, and walk on the street side of the sidewalk to ensure that she doesn’t get splashed by passing cars.

Services to be Held for Louis Jarrett

Services for Louis Ray Jarrett, 73, of Gerty are 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2022 at Richmond Ave. Free Will Baptist Church, Rev. Buddy Drake and Rev. Bobby Briggs will officiate. Burial will follow at the Allen Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 25, at Criswell Funeral Home and Thursday, May 26 at the Allen Chapel.

Memories of Typhoon Shared by Son of Atwood Sailor

The heavy cruiser USS Pittsburgh should live in fame as the ship that saved the carrier USS Franklin on March 19, 1945, after a devastating Japanese air strike. The Pittsburgh raced to the Franklin and lashed a tow line to the flaming carrier. The cruiser pulled the Franklin to safety while fighting off Japanese attackers. A brilliant feat of Naval valor. But the USS Pittsburgh is most remembered as the ship that went to war against a typhoon.
