We didn’t have any swimming pools in Stonewall, at least not like a lot of towns such as Allen have. In 1944 I was still sort of new to living there but thought I was in hog heaven anyway, having lived in Centrahoma until 1944. So, it was one day when 4 of us boys who had been down on Buck Creek in the July heat spotted this little pool of water. It was near the old water tower and its overflow had created this little pond of cool clear water and it was shielded from view by brush and cane. What better place to take a quick swim?

Allen Schools Superintendent Jeff Hiatt was rehired Monday on a three-year contract through 2025. The Allen Board of Education voted to rehire Hiatt at its regular meeting and came after executive session.

Recent tornadic weather brings back memories to Otto Harrington

The recent tonadic weather brought back memories to Otto Harrington. It was 72 years ago when a major tornado destroyed much of Holdenville. At that very time Otto was at the Holdenville Armory for National Guard Training. He was seated in the same place in this recent picture on the left that he was during that storm. He was seated there waiting for training to begin when a lady driving a car pulled up in front of where he was sitting and yelled, “There’s a tornado coming!” Thankfully Otto and the other guardsmen were on duty and began immediately helping in the aftermath of the storm. Five people were killed in the tornado, 22 were hospitalized, and 215 homes were damaged or destroyed.

122 Pounds of Marijuana Seized in Allen Traffic Stop

A speeding car with a broken tail light led to a traffic stop Saturday evening, April 30th , that took approximately 122 pounds of marijuana off the street. The street value of the product was estimated at $25,000.
