June School Board Meeting: Hammonds, Grimm Resign

By Randy Mitchell During the June 14th meetnig the Allen Board of Education accepted the resignation of longtime Board member Robert Hammonds Monday at its regular meeting. Superintendent Jeff Hiatt said Hammonds’ kids are all out of school now, so Hammonds felt like someone else should take the seat. And so, the board appointed Mike Todd to take his place. Allen Public Schools is searching for a new middle school/high school principal after Chris Grimm resigned. Grimm is leaving Allen Schools to take a position as superintendent at Erick, Oklahoma. During the meeting, the board entered into executive session, and, upon returning, hired several people, including Bill Stephens, elementary custodian; Lacy Williamson, high school secretary; Kierra Howard, elementary teacher assistant; Lacey Carney, elementary teacher assistant; Claudia Iker, elementary teacher assistant; and Crystal Bear as an elementary paraprofessional. A physical education teacher was set to be hired at Allen Schools, but he backed out Sunday night, Hiatt said, after taking a job at Ada Schools. Additionally, the board accepted the resignation of elementary special education teacher, Jolene Bakken, who is taking a special education job at Calvin. Hiatt updated the board on and had open discussion about school safety procedures and plans for Allen Public Schools moving forward. Hiatt said the board wants to send out a district-wide survey seeking input from parents. Parents would be asked in which areas Allen Schools is doing well, and what they believe needs improvement. Consent Agenda The board approved the consent agenda, which included the minutes of the May 9, 2022, Regular Meeting; Fiscal year 2021-2022 Purchase Orders and Encumbrances: General Fund numbers 282 thru 296 ($14,517.81); Sinking Fund number 4 – ($4,275); FFA Officer Retreat—Overnight trip in Broken Bow from June 15-17; Supplemental Appropriation for Child Nutrition; the Treasurer’s Report; and the Activity Fund Report. Also in the consent agenda was the renewal of memberships, services and contracts for fiscal year 2022-2023, which included the following: Acadience Reading Software; Cindy Sterba—Speech Teacher;

One Pharmacist’s View

I was driving my golf cart around Allen last week and was looking to see what Allen folks are doing this summer. Contrary to what a passersby might think, Allen is a pretty busy place. Lots of people are busy getting ready for their vacations and some are already back from theirs. I drove by the swimming pool down at the park and a happy bunch of kids were doing their best to stay cool and have fun under the blazing mid-summer sun. And yes, that’s great and fun way to beat the heat. And boy. Allen does get really hot here in July.
