Remembering Louis Nelson Rowsey

Posted in:

Louis Nelson Rowsey of Atwood passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at the age of 88. During his final days, he was lovingly surrounded by his family. Memorial Services will be announced at a later date and time.

Born March 10, 1938, in Atwood, Oklahoma, Louis was the firstborn son of Minnie Avanell Perkins and Joseph Raymond Rowsey. Louis and his younger brother, Jay, were raised in the family home that their parents, Minnie and Joe, built on the “Old Leader Schoolhouse” foundation in the former Leader Community — an upbringing that shaped his deep appreciation for family, hard work and the land that he loved.

Louis attended Atwood and Allen Public Schools and graduated from Atwood High School. Louis later served his country in the US Army Reserve XIX Corps, a Corps sized formation active during both World War II and the “Cold War.” He received an Honorable Discharge in 1963.

In 1960, Louis united his life with Sharon Gayle Hughes of Allen and began a devoted marriage grounded in love, faith and commitment. Together they built a home defined by warmth, family and unwavering devotion to one another.

Louis spent his working years as a dedicated drilling supervisor in the oil field, contributing his skills, leadership and strong work ethic to several independent drilling companies, including those operated by Victor Pryor and Virgil Manahan. He took great pride in his work and the life it provided for his family.

A man who cherished the simple joys of life, Louis was an avid outdoorsman and lover of nature, and found enjoyment and peace in hunting, gardening and fishing. He was fiercely loyal to his family and protective of those he loved. His children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he delighted in the laughter and energy they brought into his and Sharon’s home. Known for his humorous spirit, Louis had a gift for goodnatured teasing and harmless mischief — earning him the affectionate title of a true “pester wart”, a trait that brought many smiles and was one of his most endearing qualities.

Louis was a member of the Allen Assembly of God Church and his faith and relationship with God remained a steady and guiding presence throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Minnie Rowsey; and his brother, Jay Warren Rowsey.

Louis leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, cherished memories and family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon Rowsey of the home; two daughters, Kerri Lynn Longmire and husband Tim, and Teresa Angela Lane and husband Wes; a son, Stephen Ray Rowsey and wife Michele; his grandchildren Shawn Michael Taylor and wife Jennifer, Christopher Joseph Taylor and wife Lindy, Michaela Rachelle Wright and husband Garrett, Sandra Gayle Holt and husband Charles, Joseph Samuel Howshar and wife Samantha, James Haydn Lane and wife Lexi, Reece Nelson Lane, Mikaela Shae Cummings and husband Daniel, Milani Rae Rowsey and husband Dylan, and Tessa Avanell Rowsey; fourteen great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Rita Nix, Lisa Butcher, and Sandy Wafford; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and many dear friends.

Louis will be remembered for his steadfast devotion to his family, his deep faith, his strong and unfailing work ethic, and the countless moments of laughter he brought to all who were blessed to know him. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue in the hearts of those he loved.
