Vinson Family Attend Tank Batalion Reunion

Posted in:

Several members of Carl Vinson’s family made the trip to College Station, Texas to attend the “Last Roundup” of the 740th Tank Battalion Reunions. Brothers Carl and A.J. Vinson served with the battalion from its inception to its deactivation.

In 1973, the surviving members of the 740th Tank Battalion had their first reunion. More than 500 attended the event. The final reunion for the World War II 740th Tank Battalion was held at the Museum of the American G.I. in College Station over Labor Day weekend. Only three tankers still able to make the trip, Harold Bradley, Joe Dillon and Harry Miller.

The Daredevil Tankers of the 740th Tank Battalion were, and are, a proud bunch.

They plunged victoriously into the breach in the Ardennes, slashed across the Cologne Plains, twice broke through the dragons’ teeth of the Siegfried Line, split the Ruhr Pocket, and finally rumbled north in an all out drive to the Baltic Sea.

The 740th was ultimately deactivated on July 23, 1946, while assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division, Third U.S. Army. By this time, the Daredevil Tankers of World War II had either fought with or served with each of the U.S. Armies in Europe, and had even fought for a time under the banner of the British/Canadian 21st Army Group.
