Traffic Stop ends in Stand-off

Posted in:

An attempted traffic stop Tuesday morning resulted in an over 12-hour standoff. Around 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 4, 2020, an Allen Offi cer was on Hwy 48 directing traffic while a crew was doing some work at the Housing addition. Around 11 am a car was witnessed running a stop sign and speeding down the middle of the highway. The officer initiated a stop, and as he went to talk to the driver the car took off. The ensuing chase circled through town several times, with the driver going extremely fast, avoiding a stop set in place by Police Chief Darrell Armstrong. The officers slowed their pursuit and followed the driver to his home. When he reached his house he kicked down the front door and yelled that he would shoot. At that time, the officers pulled back and called for backup.

Authorization for the OHP Tactical team to take over was given by Chief Armstrong and they came on scene and began negotiations with the suspect, with several contacts made throughout the day. The tactical truck was brought in to clear out the windows, doors and parts of the roof so they could get better access to the house. During the 12 hours, they repeatedly asked him to come out with no positive response from the suspect. The OHP tac team used several disorienting rounds sent inside the residence to try to force the suspect out.

The suspect was identified as Sean Taylor, 33 of Allen.

It is believed that Taylor was prepared for the stand off as he had barricaded the doors and windows of his home.

During the altercation, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol instructed the Allen School to remain on lockdown until further notice. At 5:30 they released the students and ran the normal bus routes.

In a prepared statement, Oklahoma Highway Patrol offi cials said Armstrong requested the assistance of the OHP Tactical Team at 12:15 p.m., shortly after Taylor barricaded himself inside the home.

Pontotoc County Sheriff John Christian said the suspect threatened to shoot deputies and police prior to barricading himself inside the home.

OHP offi cials said Allen police obtained a felony warrant for Taylor’s arrest for “assault upon a police officer with a dangerous weapon, felony eluding, and terroristic threats to a police officer, which were all pursuant to the aforementioned pursuit.”

Troopers then attempted to convince Taylor to leave the house.

“Crisis negotiators made contact with Taylor, but he refused to comply with requests,” OHP offi cials said in the statement released Wednesday. “During this incident, Taylor pointed a long gun at the police. Shots were ultimately fi red by a member of the Tactical Team, which struck Taylor. Taylor succumbed to the injuries sustained and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The trooper who fired the shots will be placed on paid administrative leave while Troop Z (Investigations Division) conducts the investigation.”
