Teams in Area Basketball Playoffs

Posted in:

The Allen basketball teams have been a bright spot for area residents this week.

Thursday night the teams played their last home game of the season in the first round of the regional tournament.

In the girls contest, well it was never a contest as Allen rolled to an 83-38 win picking up their 22nd win against 2 losses. Allen fed their offense with a lot of defensive steals to coast to the win. Cherish led all scorers with 26 points, Stoney Cully had 20, Kaylee Davis 15, Addison Prentice 13. The win propelled them into the Regional Championship game on Saturday.

The usually fast starting Allen men’s team started the game ice cold until midway of really the second quarter when Union City took the 15-14 lead. After that it was all Allen as they won 50-33. “In the first half we missed 14 easy shots, that’s not us. Once we figured out that we needed to relax and play our game the points followed,” said Coach Greg Mills. Brayden Tatum led all scorers with 13 points followed by Gus Matthew 11, Easton Ledo 11, Garrett Nix 9. The win put them in the Championship game on Saturday against #7 Drummond. The Allen girls faced Waukomis on Saturday in the Regional finals. Waukomis took the early lead, but the Lady Mustangs calmed down and took 21-19 advance into the locker room at the half. “Our defense started clicking which in turns fires up or offense. I think the key is we didn’t get rattled, just went to work and things worked out for us. We are so excited to bring home the Regional Tournament Championship trophy,” said Coach Dottie Slabaugh. The win brings the Allen girls needing just one win to get to the State Tournament. Addison Prentice and Kaylee Davis split high point honors with 14 each. Cherish Woodward added 10 and Stoney Cully 8.

The Allen men started off strong offensively in their game against #7 ranked Drummond. A 28-21 lead at the half game the Mustangs a nice cushion and even after the end of the third quarter Allen owned a 38-32 lead. BUT the fourth quarter Drummond decided to start making 3 pointers from anywhere on the court, 5 in the quarter, which knocked Allen lead out fast and just before the buzzer sounded at regulation Bodee Garrett scored a put back to knot the score 52-52. The OT was not Allen’s friend as they were outscored 5-2 ending the game with a 57-54 loss. “Things didn’t go the way we wanted, and Drummond got hot in the fourth quarter, and we couldn’t seem to answer, there are lot of things to improve before the next game, but I think we will get those things ironed out during this week of practice,” said Coach Greg Mills. Brayden Tatum led all scorers with 22, Easton Ledo 10, Gus Matthews 12, Garrett Nix 5, Bodee Garrett 5. The loss puts the Mustangs in the loser’s bracket where they will need to win 3 in a row to claim their stake the State Tournament. No easy task but the Mustangs had been on an 18game win streak, so it is definitely doable.
