Teacher's hiring rescinded

The Allen Board of Education decided Monday, August 6th , to rescind the hiring of a special education teacher who was hired in July.

The board met for a special meeting to discuss the teacher, Michelle Dawn Roberson. Allen Schools Superintendent Dr. Bill Caruthers said he could not elaborate on why the board canceled the hiring of the teacher.

However, Roberson, who legally changed her last name from Childress in 2017, has an arrest record. She was arrested in February 2014 after she allegedly arrived at an Ada school while under the influence of alcohol.

The board voted in July to hire Robertson; the vote to rescind the offer was 3-0 Monday night with Robert Hammonds, Jami Rinehart and Frayne Black voting yes. Jeff Maloy and Jason Watkins were absent.

According to the arrest report submitted by Ada Police Officer Jaron Ballagh, Childress was called on February 14, 2014, to “substitute teach a class” at Washington Elementary School Ada.

Childress was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication and was later given a breath test which produced a result of .263 breath alcohol concentration, more than three times the legal limit, according to Ballagh.

Also, Childress pleaded guilty in 2013 to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence, according to court records.

In further business Monday night, the board offered the position of special education teacher to Dennis Smith for the 2018-19 school year. Smith, who previously served as the special education director for Holdenville Public Schools, will fill the Junior High and High School vacancy at Allen.
