Voters went to the polls Tuesday to choose their candidates for the General Election in November. Locally, Democrats had only one item on their ballots, the choice of Madison Horn or Jason Bollinger for the U.S. Senate race, while Republicans had a number of choices to make.

Statewide Democrats chose Horn with 65.48% of the votes over Bollinger’s 34.52%. Local voters agreed with Pontotoc County giving Horn 545 votes compared to Bollinger’s 273, and Hughes County voting 169 to 139.

Republican winners were MarkWayne Mullins over T.W. Shannon to run for the U.S. Senate. Mullins will face Madison Horn in November for the seat vacated by Jim Inhofe.

Statewide Mullins garnered 65.08% of the votes while locally he won 1,366 to Shannon’s 966 votes in Pontotoc County and 646 to 172 in Hughes.

Also of major interest was the Republican race for Superintendent of Public Instruction. Statewide Ryan Walters beat April Grace. Locally Pontotoc County carried Grace 1,363 votes to 979 but Hughes County favored Walters 454 to 350.

For the Commissioner of Labor, the Republican candidate in November will be Leslie Kathryn Osborn who beat Sean Roberts for the nomination. Todd Russ defeated Clark Jolley to be the Republican nominee for State Treasurer.

Kim David defeated Todd Thomsen statewide for the Corporation Commission spot on the ballot. A decision local voters didn’t agree with. Both Pontotoc and Hughes Counties went with Thomsen, an Ada native.

And for Hughes County voters in U.S. Representative District 02, Josh Brecheen defeated Avery Frix for the November General Election 497 votes to 295 locally and 33,507 to 30,674 district wide.
