School board meets new baseball coach

Posted in:

Allen School Board members met Monday with Allen High School’s new head baseball coach, Mike Edwards.

Edwards was hired a few weeks ago. He was originally scheduled to meet with the board at a special meeting two weeks ago, but was unable to attend

At Monday’s meeting, Edwards’ interaction with the board took place in executive session. However, Edwards did speak with The Allen Advocate.

Edwards was the head baseball coach at New Lima for 15 years before accepting the job at Allen. The move will be a step up for Edwards, as New Lima was a smaller school system which played Class B ball. It was sometimes Class A, but mostly B.

“It’ll be a bigger class, because, here at Allen, (we’ll) play Class A, and plus borderline of 2A,” Edwards said. “We never played up to 2A at New Lima.”

Edwards said he is also looking forward to having more players, because it was usually the bare minimum at New Lima.

“I really look forward to having that many more options, besides just nine (players),” he said. “There will be more to choose from, and more to work with.” Edwards said he is also looking forward to having an assistant coach.

“I’ve never had an assistant coach before,” he said. Edwards will also teach at Allen Schools. Nothing is set in stone, but Edwards is certified in teaching business, Oklahoma history, and government.
