One Pharmacist’s View
Texas & OU

For those interested parties who wonder how my better half is doing just let me say this: “My wife continues to improve somewhat and is hobbling around in the kitchen fixing me a bite to eat, even as I write.” We just drove in from the Texas/OU game where I attended the game without her. Attending a game without her is not all that much fun and I missed her and her purse a lot. Besides carrying a lot of change for the concession stands she packs into each and every game just about every kind of pharmaceutical nostrum that one might need. She makes sure I have my game day radio and correct ticket as well as special medicines and balms for nausea, diarrhea, itching skin, smarting eyes, ringing ears, dizziness and headaches. Nitroglycerin 0.4 for surprise angina, band aids for wounds, Hall’s Cough Drops and comprehensive lists of prescription medications we take in case a sudden trip to the ER is needed. But like her, the nostrums stayed home too.
Saturday’s OU/Texas game was probably the most important game so far this year. My readers will be happy to learn (as was I) that I didn’t come down with any maladies during the game and in fact, as the Sooners ran up the score on a hapless Texas team I became totally oblivious of any and all medical concerns. There was another blessing: I was able to palm off her ticket for face value (no small amount of money in itself) to a preacher from the OKC metro so all in all I came out pretty good. The preacher, a good old boy named Mike Kebone was good company and between the two of us we enjoyed the game very much—even if I did call him “Tim” most of the time.
When the carnage ended that OU visited upon the football program of UT it was easy to see that head coach, Mac Brown hadn’t stopped his whining. One Texas sports writer wrote that Bob Stoops and his Sooners accomplished something that David Boren and the entire Big-12 had failed to do: The complete humbling of Mac Brown’s Texas Football program and their Big-12 busting Bevo-Vision stuff. One other news item tells of the giddy victory dance performed by Joe Castiglione after being awarded a game ball by Bob Stoops—but it wasn’t for his play, it was his birthday.
We did the fair a little bit after the game, partly to view the sad remnants of Horn fans as they roamed the grounds forlornly in grumpy remorse. I don’t know why they didn’t just all go home. It was not a pretty picture but we went ahead and ate an abundance of unhealthy fried things—skipping the fried candy bars and other ridiculous heart-stoppers. Later, we walked back over to a part of Dallas that looks a lot like Haiti and rescued my car which I had left guarded by a native of the area. The next morning Pat and I (after making sure our OU decals and flags were still in place) drove home in a welcome and refreshing rain.
I hope all of you are enjoying the nice weather this fall as much as I am. It’s always a good Sunday morning in the Allen’s Older Men’s Class (AKA Cemetery Class) when OU, OSU and The Allen Mustangs win their football games. Be sure and go to church this Sunday.
