Mustangs Trample Cougars
The Allen Mustangs earned their second victory of the 2020 season Friday night, handily defeating the Canadian Cougars.
The non-district game was also Allen’s Homecoming.
“Our kids played with a lot of energy tonight, and maybe played with a little extra motivation,” Assistant Coach Zach Sullivan said. “It was Homecoming, and we’re celebrating our 100 th year of football at Allen. At halftime, we honored the Allen football alumni from throughout the decades, many of our players had family members who were recognized.”
The Mustangs’ offense played well, but the defense was absolutely stifling. The Cougars rushed 40 times for negative 25 yards and completed only three of 16 passes for 16 yards.
“Defensively, we rallied to the football, defended the pass and tackled well on the run,” Sullivan said.
First Quarter
Despite the final score of 36-0, the first quarter was quite competitive.
Early in the game, an Allen fumble created a tense situation when Canadian recovered the ball at the Mustangs’ 17 yard line.
However, Allen’s defense held and Canadian turned the ball over on downs at the Mustangs’ 24 yard line. But Allen’s ensuing drive stalled and the Mustangs punted the ball.
Canadian again turned the ball over on downs, and, with about four minutes left in the first quarter, the Mustangs scored when Garrett Nix rushed for 15 yards and into the end zone. After a successful PAT kick by senior Clayton Shackelford, Allen was up, 7-0, which is where the score stayed until the middle of the second quarter, when Nix scored again, that time on a 67- yard rush.
Shackelford kicked the PAT to make the score 14- 0.
And with about three minutes left in the half, Nix rushed in from 10 yards out for another score, along with a PAT kick by Shackelford to make the halftime score 21-0, Mustangs.
Second Half
The third quarter started off with a bang as Nix took the kickoff and ran it all the way to the house.
Another successful PAT kick by Shackelford brought the score to 28- 0, Allen, which held until early in the fourth, when Nix again scored on a rushing touchdown. The following two-point conversion attempt failed, however, making the score 34-0.
But the Mustangs found a way to get the two points anyway, when they tackled a Cougars player in the end zone for a safety.
The Mustangs (2-1/0- 0) will travel to Mounds Friday to take on the Eagles (0-3/0-0) for their first district game of the season. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
