The Allen Mustangs were behind on points for most of Friday night’s game, but rallied to beat the Savanna Bulldogs, 32-27.

The win was due in no small part to Allen junior Shawn Husband, who torched Savanna’s defense by rushing for 310 yards on 37 carries during the game, the most in a single game in school history.

The previous 11 man school record was held by Allen great Bryan Rockey, who turned in a 305-yard performance in 1991 versus Weleetka.

“We didn’t know until after the game that he had that many carries or that many yards,” Assistant Coach Zach Sullivan said. “The offensive line was blocking well, and he was running it well, so we kept giving him the ball. We were in a battle with Savanna so we needed all of them!”

And the Mustangs defense came up big as well, holding off Savanna in the waning minutes of the game.

First Half

The first half wasn’t great for the Mustangs, as they only mustered two points.

About midway through the first quarter, Allen sophomore Tagus Howard sacked the Bulldogs’ quarterback for a safety.

However, Savanna scored with about one minute left in the fi rst on a three-yard rush, then kicked the PAT to make it 7-2, Bulldogs.

And Savanna scored again with about three minutes left in the fi rst half, and, after an unsuccessful PAT kick, went up 13-2.

Third Quarter

The Mustangs headed out of the locker room in the second half determined to win. The second half was also where Shawn Husband gained most of his rushing yards, 224 to be exact.

About three minutes into the third quarter, Husband rushed the ball into the end zone from 26 yards out, and also got the twopoint conversion to make it 13-10.

However, Savanna answered with a 65-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing drive. The score was 20-10 after the PAT kick.

The Mustangs made a drive with about four minutes left in the quarter and Husband scored again, this time on a three-yard rush. The twopoint conversion failed, however, leaving the Mustangs down by four points.

Fourth Quarter

Husband scored again a little over three minutes into the fourth quarter on a two-yard run to put the Mustangs in the lead for the fi rst time since the fi rst quarter. A pass from Chad Milne to Quinn Corum for the two-point conversion put the Mustangs up 24- 20.

But the lead didn’t last long as Savanna scored on a 25-yard pass to go up 27- 24 after a failed PAT kick.

But with just under four minutes left in the game, the Mustangs drove into the red zone and Chad Milne punched it in from two yards out. Husband then ran the ball in for the two-point conversion to make the score 32-27, Allen.

As the Bulldogs had plenty of time to score again, the Mustangs defense was determined to not let that happen.

“Defensively our guys made some big stops, especially late in the game,” Sullivan said. “Savanna has a very good passing attack. On their last drive they threw the deep ball on fourth down near our end zone and Quinton (Walker) was able to defl ect it. That stop gave us the ball back and we were able to take a knee a couple plays later. It was a great team effort and a great team win.”

The Mustangs (5-4/3- 3) will travel to Konawa Friday to face the Tigers (4-2/2-2) for a district matchup. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
