Mustangs Host Porter Friday
Allen loses to Konawa
The Allen Mustangs lost to the Konawa Tigers Friday night, 48-14, but will play Porter in the first round of the playoffs.
The local team entered last Friday’s contest without nine of their regular players. Coaches learned early Friday that nearly a third of the squad, including a number of the starters, were out of action due to COVID-19 quarantine. The players had been contact-exposed to the virus.
Line-up changes were made through the day and continued as late as the bus ride to the contest.
“When you lose a third of your team on game day it makes for a rough situation,” Coach Zac Sullivan said. “But I’m proud of their effort. Our kids kept battling.”
The first half of Friday’s game against Konawa was dismal for the Mustangs as most of their drives ended with punts. Konawa had two drives in the first quarter which ended in touchdowns. However, Allen’s defense held in the second quarter, and the teams headed to the locker rooms with Konawa up 12-0.
The third quarter wasn’t good for the Mustangs, either, as they were unable to score. Konawa added eight points in the third, however, to make it 20-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
And while the Mustangs scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, the Tigers made four touchdowns.
Konawa scored first in the quarter to go up 27-0.
Allen scored its first touchdown with about nine minutes left in the game when Chad Milne completed a four-yard pass to Quinton Walker. After Shawn Husband rushed for the two-point conversion, the score was 27-8, Konawa.
After the Tigers scored a touchdown with about seven minutes to go, the Mustangs scored their second and final touchdown with about four minutes left in the game when Milne connected with Walker again for a touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt failed however, leaving the score at 34-14, Konawa.
The Tigers went on to score two more touchdowns to make the final score 48-14.
The Mustangs (5-5/3-4) will host first rounds of playoffs against the Porter Pirates (2-6/1-4) this Friday, November 13th. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and those same nine players will still be out of the game, possibly joined by other teammates.
Coach Sullivan said, “We had kids playing out of position [at Konawa], but at least this week we can get them prepared for it.”
Good Luck, Mustangs! It’s been an amazing season.
