By Randy Mitchell Damage from a hailstorm in late September that affected many residents in the Allen area is causing headaches at Allen Schools as well.

The matter was discussed at Monday’s regular meeting of the Allen Board of Education.

“As you know the town got hit hard,” Superintendent Jeff Hiatt said. “Every vehicle on campus had substantial damage, with two vehicles being totaled. We are in the process of getting our vehicles, including buses, fixed.”

And it wasn’t just vehicles, building roofs also sustained damage and an insurance adjuster visited this week and inspected all the roofs. “We also had other property around campus that was damaged,” Hiatt said. “With all this said we will be working with our insurance company to see what is covered and how much they will pay in fixing damages.”

Also during the meeting, fundraisers were approved for elementary, high school faculty and head start.

Additionally, during action items, Josh Vaughn was approved by the board to be the junior high academic team coach.

During administrative reports, Hiatt spoke about enrollment.

“Our enrollment right now (P4-12th) is 440 students,” he said. “It is down from 449 a year ago, ... (and) down from 441 from where we ended the year last year.”

A civil rights audit was conducted, and Allen Schools passed, with a few minor exceptions, Hiatt said.

“We have to put up some handicap signs up in the high school gym parking lot and on the handicap seats inside the gym,” he said. “We have to update our nondiscriminatory statements.”

Hiatt spoke about some projects that will be happening soon around the campus of Allen Schools.

“The upper elementary is getting new front doors over fall break,” Hiatt said. “This door has caused us fits for many years and is worn out. We are also getting cameras installed in the junior high gym. We are also getting an outdoor canopy installed in two weeks behind the cafeteria which will provide shade and an outdoor eating area for our JH/HS students. Finally, we are getting signage put up on all our buildings assigning each building a name for 911 purposes. We will be assigning all classrooms a room number with proper signs including room number on doorways and exterior windows all for security purposes.”

Consent Agenda The board approved the consent agenda, which included the minutes of the September 14, 2023, regular meeting; The fiscal year 2023-2024 Purchase Orders and Encumbrances: General Fund numbers 192 through 212 ($41,799.15); Sinking Fund number 1 ($1,575); the Treasurer’s report; and the Activity Fund report.

Also included in the consent agenda was the OSSBA New and Updated Policy for fiscal year 2024: EFA, EFA-E1, EFA-P, EFA-R1, EHBDBA-E, EHDD, EIED, EMC, FNF-E2, FNF-R and remove EHDD-R; and fundraisers (Elementary, Head Start, High School Faculty).
