1960’s News

The Mustangs don’t have a game scheduled this week and their next game will be against Maud, October 13, on the local field.

Allen 25, Bowlegs 0

The Mustangs looked good last Friday night when they defeated a good Bowlegs’ team 25-0. The Booster Club picked W.B. Borders as the outstanding back and David Watson as the outstanding lineman for their play against the Bison of Bowlegs.

Bison Threatened

Bowlegs threatened twice in the first quarter, but the Mustang defense stiffened and they stopped the Bison inside their 20 yard line. The first quarter ended with neither team being able to score.

In the second quarter, Butler intercepted a pass and the Mustangs offense began to roll. Snow, Borders and Johnson ripped off good yardage to move the ball to the Bison 30, where Snow then went all the way for the first TD. The half ended with Allen leading 6-0.

The Bisons started strong in the second half as they pushed to the Allen 12, however again the Mustang defense got tough as Kenny Hughes threw the Bison back on the 30 yard line on a 4 th down situation. Third quarter ended with the Mustangs on the Bison 40 yard line.

Three plays later the Mustangs faced a 4 th and 8 situation. Butler gambled and it paid off as he hit and Kenny Hughes went to the Bison 10. Butler hit Hughes with another pass for the TD. Score 12-0.

The Mustang defense again looked good as they blocked a Bison punt on the 27 yard line and a few plans later “Poncho” Johnson scored to make the tall read 18-0. Butler converted and Allen led 19-0.

Later as Allen was driving again, Wofford’s pass was intercepted by a Bowlegs lad who fumbled as he was hit. Dick Kemler recovered the fumble for the Mustangs on the Bison 15 yard line. After a couple plays “Poncho” Johnson scored from five yards out. Final score Allen 25, Bowlegs 0.

Coach Ray Isaacs was well pleased with the Mustangs play and commented that the boys from Bowlegs, coached by Enoch Brooks, had a fine ball club and one of the best lines the Mustangs have faced thus far.

Butler, Snow, Borders, Wofford and Johnson all looked good in the backfield. Wofford began to look like himself on defense as he made several good defensive plays. Borders was a standout all over against the Bisons. He played well offensively and his defensive play left little to be desired as he harassed the enemy backfield all evening and made several outstanding defensive plays.

David Watson led the balloting for lineman of the week as he turned in a fine defensive performance. He made hard tackles against the Bowlegs and was in on many plays.

Peay, Kemler, McDonald, McDougal, C. Brand and Robinson also played very well and should come in for much of the credit. Charles Brand at one time during the game made a fine tackle on a Bison who was determined on going all the way, but Brand overtook him from behind.
