Allen School Board Talks About Roof Damage
The Allen Board of Education held a special meeting Tuesday morning, October 23rd, to address an emergency situation caused by a hailstorm that passed through the area in September. The matter was listed on the agenda as, “Discussion and possible vote to adopt a Resolution declaring an emergency under the Public Competitive Bidding Act of 1974 resulting from roof damage to the district’s campus caused by thunderstorms on September 23, 2023. “Discussion and possible vote to approve such contracts and to take such actions as may be immediately necessary in response to emergency conditions resulting from storm damage at the district’s campus.”
The board approved the matter.
Superintendent Jeff Hiatt said by declaring an emergency, it will speed up the repair process, which is necessary as one building, which had a small leak created by the hail, now has a major leak, especially in the past few days as the rains have arrived.
Declaring an emergency allows school administrators to go ahead and hire roof repair companies to get roofs repaired without having to go through the closed-bid process, Hiatt said, which normally takes a lot more time.
“It’ll get things moving quicker,” Hiatt said, “because we’ve got some major roof problems.”
Hiatt said an adjuster inspected the roofs of all 20 buildings on campus, and every one of them sustained damage and need to be repaired or replaced.
Also included at the meeting was a matter concerning the annual school board election.
It was listed on the agenda as, “Discussion and possible vote to approve a Resolution calling for the annual school board election. The seat to be filled at this election is office number Four (4).”
The matter was approved by the board.
The school system must fill out paperwork, then submit it to the county election board for approval by November 15th. Hiatt said because the next school board meeting (November 13th) is so close to that deadline, it was decided to address the matter at Tuesday’s special meeting.
Board President Kelly Hurt is up for election next April and is planning on rerunning.
