Allen Schools Board of Education held its regular September meeting Monday.

During the meeting, Allen Schools Federal Programs Director Mary Pat Sappenfield spoke about Title 1 -- the Elementary and Secondary Education Act -- was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965.

Sappenfield spoke to inform the board, parents and community members of the federal program, of which the school receives some federal funds.

Title 1 funding is based upon a calculation (determined each fall) of students that are enrolled in the school who receive a free, or a reduced meal rate.

Sappenfield said Allen Schools spends the money first, then files for reimbursement. The majority of Title 1 funds for Allen are used to support the pre-k program where there are two early childhood certified teachers and two early childhood paraprofessionals.

Title 1 also helps with purchasing equipment in the elementary computer lab such as new equipment and upgrades.

Action Items

The board approved the only action item on the agenda, the sanctioning of the softball booster club for fiscal year 2022 and approved their yearly financial report.

“They didn’t get their stuff in last month on time, so they weren’t approved to be a booster club, we caught them back up,” Superintendent Jeff Hiatt said.

The board also approved putting a house up for sale, which is on land that the school system recently purchased. The system will keep the land, and, if purchased, the house will need to be moved from its present location.

“We’re selling the house if anyone wants to move it,” Hiatt said. “It’s a movable house, and it’s not too bad of shape, so we’ll see if anyone wants it.”

The school system will take bids on the house.

The board also approved hiring Philip Jones as an IT (information technology) support person part time.

“It’s a good problem to have, we’ve gotten so much technology,” Hiatt said.

Consent Agenda

The board approved the consent agenda, which included the minutes of the August 12 th regular meeting; the fiscal year 2021-2022 Purchase Orders and Encumbrances: General Fund numbers 149 through 170 ($25,956.88); Child Nutrition Fund number 34 ($700); Sinking Fund number 1 ($458,550); the Treasurer’s report; the Activity Fund report; the Estimate of Needs for the year ending June 30, 2022; and fundraisers for fiscal year 2022 (Band, Baseball, FCCLA, FFA, Class of 2022, Class of 2023 and Yearbook).
