The matter was voted on and passed August 14th at the regular meeting of the Allen Board of Education. Previously, Byng Schools hosted Allen alternative education students, but Byng would only take a maximum of four students.

Allen Schools Superintendent Jeff Hiatt said Allen has five alternative education students this year.

Allen schools receives a certain amount of money from the state for alternative education, but it is not enough to pay a fulltime alternative ed teacher.

The matter was listed on the consent agenda.

Superintendent Report

Hiatt spoke to the board about enrollment, which, on the first day of school for P3-12th grade was 461.

“We ended the year last year at 455,” Hiatt said. “A year ago we started the year at 465. Our enrollment looks steady. Each year we have students that move in and move out of our district so the number fluctuates.”

Action Items

The board approved all action items, which included: - Allen Public Schools will be taking the ACT as the locally selected, national recognized assessment for the College and Career Readiness Assessment (CCRA) for fiscal year 2024.

- College concurrent credits for high school credits equivalencies for fiscal year 2024.

- The district paying all staff members breakfast ($2.28) and lunch ($4.70), for fiscal year 2024.

- To co-op with Calvin Public Schools for girls fastpitch softball fall 2023 season.

Executive Session After returning from executive session, the board approved hiring Susan Dorsey to work in the cafeteria. The board also approved all certified and support staff contracts for the school year fiscal year 2024.
