Allen City Council Meets
The Allen City council met Monday for their regular monthly meeting.
The biggest discussion on the night was approving an Emergency Proclamation for the damage incurred during the last snow/ice storm. Although we were fairly lucky on damages, we sustained some damage to the water wells, sewer plant, streets, park, etc. A discussion ensued about being prepared for the next weather disaster. The needs listed were a location to house people and getting power to such location. The Masonic Lodge has always been willing to help with a location and we will contact them to make sure that agreement is still good. This time we had borrowed a generator for the building from Pontotoc County Emergency Management. So if we are approved funding we will purchase a generator of our own. Currently the water wells and sewer plant have a generator. Cost estimates are currently being gathered to turn in with our application.
During police report, Chief Armstrong reported 13 speeding, 1 trespassing,1 Driving under suspension and 2 failure to stop at stop sign. As always officers are encouraged to address the drug problem in town.
In new business discussion the council discussed applying for the park improvement grant from the Choctaw Nation. This program will pay 75% of the costs for upgrades. If we are approved we will use Tobacco settlement grant money we have been awarded, in-kind services, such as manual labor, machinery, engineering/ planning costs plus what other cash we can round up. A rough plan would be to move the playground to the north part of the park, purchase new playground equipment, resurface basketball and tennis courts, repair swimming pool and if money allows a construct a small splash pad. Final budget numbers are being put together. If you want to help or know someone that would like to help call city hall and leave your name. Again this is only in planning stages not an action item.
