They returned to find the first car disabled, its hood up and spark plug wires yanked out. Furious, they trekked up the hill again, leaving one driver and a few friends with the car. At the top, they were greeted by Hughes County police cars, their spotlights blazing. The whole group was rounded up and hauled to the Hughes County Jail in Holdenville, where they were booked and spent the night.

In Ada, Oklahoma, folks still talk about a lynching around 1907, proudly claiming that the Wild West drew its final breath in their city. As a side note, the little kid peering through the barn hole in that famous old photograph was supposedly a Gilmore—a name that carries weight in Allen’s history.
