Services Friday for Gene Turpin
Gene Turpin passed away at his home in Atwood, Oklahoma on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at the age of 85 years.
Gene was the son of Melvin Leon Turpin and Mary Etta (Cherry) Turpin, born on July 7, 1933, in Non, Oklahoma. He attended Non schools through the eighth grade, and graduated Gerty High School with the Class of 1952. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in 1953-1954 during the Korean Conflict.
He married Joyce Lea Morris in Atwood, Oklahoma on May 17, 1957. They moved into a house in Atwood, where they brought up two sons, Gil and Ledon. Through four remodels, that house remained their cherished home for sixty-one years.
Gene was a farmer/ rancher, and until the 1960s worked hauling sand and gravel for the family business, Turpin Brothers’ Sand Plant in Non. He loved to hunt and fish. He and his wife attended the Atwood Church of Christ.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Etta Turpin; four brothers, Ralph Turpin, James Turpin, Elvin Turpin, and Leon Turpin; two sisters, Kathleen Raney and Ruth Tipton.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joyce, of the home; his two sons and daughters-in-law, Gil and Lisa Turpin of New Lima, and Ledon and Sherri Turpin of Ada; four grandchildren, Tyler Turpin of New Lima, Jessica Turpin of Latta, Chrissa Turpin of Ada, and Ashlee McCoy and husband, Jet, also of Ada; great-granddaughter Ti Silver McCoy; one brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Doretta Turpin of Calvin, and three sisters, Shirley Ellis of Stuart, Pauline Johnson and husband Jerry of Lindale, Texas, and Margaret Levingston and husband Roger of Allen; numerous nieces and nephews, other family members, and many friends.
Funeral services will be Friday, August 10, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at the Atwood Church of Christ, and Gene will be laid to rest at the Calvin Cemetery. Keith Warren will be the officiating minister. Pallbearers are Ronnie Davis, Stephen Holland, Lawayne Morris, Dennis Turpin, James Johnson, and John Ellis. Honorary pallbearers are Hank Turpin, Melvin Turpin, Greg Turpin, Ryan Davis, Paul Johnson, Brent Turpin, Shelley Turpin, Gary Tipton, Charles Tipton, Larry Tipton, Gary Raney, and Farrel Raney.
Services are under direction of Fisher Funeral Home of Holdenville.
