Sales Tax and Use Tax Down for Allen
The July 9, 2025 distribution of sales tax collections by the Oklahoma Tax Commission primarily represents local tax receipts from May business. Companies that remit more than $2,500 monthly in sales tax receipts are required to file and pay electronically. The monies they reported this period represent sales from May 16th to 31st and estimated sales from June 1st to the 15th.
The disbursement of $203,937,980 in sales tax collections returned to the cities and towns reflected an increase of $1,214,846 from the $202,723,134 distributed to them in July last year. The use tax disbursement to cities and towns was $34,131,944.
Allen took a loss of $3,536.51 this year from the returns received in 2024. The July 2025 sales tax payment was for $17,037.08 compared to $20,573.59 last year.
Other area cities and town receiving less in 2025 were Ada, Calvin, Francis, and Gerty; Atwood, Byng and Holdenville posted gains.
Ada brought in $1,679,078.92 this year, down from $1,704,105.75 in 2024; Calvin took a minor drop, receiving $10,191.28 compared to $10,766.51 last year; Francis dropped to $1,580.98 from $1,825.20; and Gerty received $208.92 compared to $294.27 last year.
A gain of $73.39 was reported for Atwood which received $574.59 this year compared to $501.20 last year. Byng received a more substantial gain, receiving $25,228.67 this year compared to $19,439.44 last year; and Holdenville also increased, receiving $278,422.48 up from $254,008.13.
Both counties, Hughes and Pontotoc, were down from the same reporting time last year. Hughes County brought in $97,359.93 compared to $104,532.72 last year; Pontotoc County dropped to $484,356.78 down from $495,287.61 in 2024.
Under Oklahoma law, use tax must be paid on tangible personal property purchased and brought into this state for storage, use or consumption. If the property is brought into a county or municipality that also levies a use tax, the applicable county or municipal use tax must also be paid. Retailers maintaining a place of business within the state and/ or making sales from a place of business outside the state for use in Oklahoma are required to collect from the customer the appropriate state and local use tax.
The majority of cities and towns that The Advocate reports on took losses in 2025 Use Tax returns with only Ada and Gerty posting gains.
Allen dropped more than half, receiving only $2,405.26, a loss of $2,459.34 from the 2024 receipt of $5,264.60.
Byng dropped to $5,114.17 from $6,394.46; Calvin receipts total $1,473.17 in 2025, down from $2,043.76; Francis earned $737.13 compared to $1,323.00 last year; and Holdenville dropped to $30,229.32 from $39,272.21.
Ada increased to $214,290.33 from $191,792.04; and Gerty posted $146.26 this year, up from $125.33 last year. Atwood does not collect Use Tax.
The two counties of interest to locals were split. Hughes County dropped to $17,089.44 from $21,473.81 last year, but Pontotoc County reported $82,732.18 compared to $76,832.43 in 2024.
