Threads of Life
Books Obsolete?
Awhile back, I worked for a couple of days at the local library helping to pull books off the shelves that had not been checked out for the past ten years. These were good books, by very good and well-known authors. All of the books
A lot of people remember our “Threads of Life” article writer, Cleo LeVally. At the age of 96 she was the oldest person in attendance at the Healdton “Old Timers” Annual Breakfast on Saturday, August 24th . An organizer of the event for many years, she offi cially passed the torch to new organizers for this year.
pulled off the shelves were then stamped as being withdrawn and put out for sale to the public at five books for $1.
After I worked at the library, I went home and looked at my books, thinking that I could pull some and add them to the collection at the library. Thus I would free up some space at my house and get some of those books out of the floor by my chair and out of the window sills. A long story is that I could not get rid of very many, so I did not make any more room there. I still have books on the window sill and stacked by my chair.
Any book you want to read these days can be brought up on a cell phone by the touch on the keyboard. How long will it be when books, as we know them, will be obsolete?
I have observed as many as three friends together, and they are all on their own cell phone. They were not talking or conversing with each other, but each of them had their own cell phone and were either texting or talking on it but not to each other.
I do not have a cell phone that can be used as most people use them. I had one in my car for years and only used it twice. Once was when I was helping out in the community looking (as was thought of at the time) for a lost student. This turned out to not be the case. She was found at a friend’s home and had failed to tell her parents where she would be.
The other time was when I was out of town on a trip and had a fl at tire. I knew I could not be home at the stated time so I called home to let my family know why I was delayed. When the price to have a car phone kept going up, I canceled the one I had. Now I only have one that I can use during an emergency, and I can call 911. That is the only number I can call on it, and there is no charge for the phone itself. I have never used it but I keep it charged and ready.
