Threads of Life
It has been several years since I have been in Allen, but my memories are at the forefront. There have been many changes in the alumni and the banquet. The library was open, and I visited there, but no one was down town or at the school. So, I drove around, saw the places where I used to live, visited with some neighbors and left for home. I did not stay
for the night activities, because it takes me two hours to drive home.
I have many fond memories of Allen, including the school, the house where I lived and the things about the farm. The land we farmed was over the fence from the property that is now city property. I don’t know if the lake is still on the land where I lived. The present city property was owned by my uncle, and we had access to the creeks. We often swam in the lake that was there at the time. Recently, I told someone about the sorghum mill that we had and operated every fall. I am sure that no one has seen a sorghum mill for many years and do not know what that is.
When I lived there it was a part of every fall to operate it. Our sorghum was sold to the Griffin Grocery Company. It was valued because it had a golden color and was not so heavy like so many at that time.
The land we owned and the piece that the house was on were very small the last time I was there. It was hard to find my way around the roads, because there have been so many changes.
But, like the way of every community, change happens and we go with the flow.
