Betty White - First Lady of Television

Posted in:
Cleo Emerson Levally

In the late 1950’s, Betty White and Al Jarvis were on television all afternoon. My neighbor, who lived across the street from me, kept children for working mothers. She bought the first television in our neighborhood. She was my son’s babysitter.

In Betty and Al’s program, they did all the commercials. It was just a part of their program. Their show was on for five hours each afternoon, and my neighbor’s television, the first in the neighborhood, was the first I had even seen, and this show was one I enjoyed watching. It was really a talk show, and calls would come in from the public. They would answer them on television. In 1934, she hosted and produced The Betty White Show. So, I have watched Betty White on television off and on for many years.

It was a surprise to see her on a recent television awards program. She came on the screen and talked a little bit about her first days in television. She and I are the same age. She was born on January 1, and I was born on December 31, the day before!

Through the years, I have watched her on different television programs. Several years ago, she was on a television show with Rue McClanahan, Bea Arthur, and Estelle Getty, called The Golden Girls, and it can still be found on television today. When I found that show, I realized that I have lived history!
