Teams pick up wins over Latta; Districts Next Week
The Mustangs ended their last home regular season game of the year with BIG wins over Latta. Number 6 in Class 2A Ladies from Latta came to town to face Allen #8 in Class A and it proved to be a great battle. A battle that the Lady Mustangs won 55-49. At the half both teams hit the locker room knotted at 28 and remained tied at the end of the third quarter. Allen outscored the Lady Panthers 16-10 to pull out the exciting win. The Lady Mustangs were hot from the field hitting 58 % of their shots compared to Latta’s 45%. The three-point arc was a hot spot for both teams, but Allen made 10 of 25 for 40 % while Latta took 20 shots and connected on 6. Allen also held the free shot edge hitting 76.5% of their 17 trips while Latta had 18 free shots and hit 11. Addison Prentice had the shooters eye scoring 24 points including 18 points from the threepoint line; Stoney Cully hit double figures with 12 points and had 4 assists. Kaylee Davis 9 points, Kryslyn Stephens 6, Cherish Woodward 4. “It was a big game for us, playoffs start next week, and we need tough games to get us ready for what’s coming up. Latta always brings a good team, and I am excited our girls got the win, they have been working hard getting ready for games like this,” said Coach Dottie Slabaugh.
The Allen and Latta men also had a backand- forth exciting game with the 48-41 win. Stats were not available at press time. “It’s good to get a win like this, things weren’t going as we planned but we went to work and got the win. It was a physical game, and we expect more of that during the playoffs,” said Coach Greg Mills.
Speaking of playoffs, Allen will play host to Clayton and Keota for the District tournament which begins next Friday, Feb 14 with the finals on Saturday. The next opening round of Regionals Allen will host the first night the winners and runners up from District 1 (Weleetka, Porum and Gans) and our District (Allen, Clayton and Keota). The Regional main site will be at Indianola. The next round after that is Area and it will be held in Noble.
The teams end the regular season with a trip Friday to an always tough Stonewall and on Tuesday they will travel to Tishomingo.
