To Shoot or Not to Shoot

For many of us the end of this pandemic is at hand. And I say, “Praise the Lord.” Being cooped up and suffering through one of the coldest winters in history has also been hard on us. I am a guy who loves getting out and seeing my fellow man. Going to church and other community events is my wife’s and my life stream. I consider myself fortunate to live in the house I live in. A place where I raised my four children and spent much of my life. But as comfortable as my house is, I sure got tired of being cooped up. But like I say, now it is nice to be able to go to church and even go into a restaurant.

And go is just what we did last Saturday. Daughter Lesli Costner celebrated her 52nd birthday and we all drove up to Nobel and ate at Kendall’s—a notorious eatery for ballgame goers and for my family. There was a dozen of us and later we drove out to East Norman and indulged in intensive visiting, birthday cake eating and later even enjoyed a big game of dominoes. Everyone there had completed their Covid shots, and it makes me hope that all will soon have taken this plunge— all had our shots.

Next Saturday, starting at about 10:30 more of these free shots will be given out downtown, at the new gym. I hope for those who just cannot get out or for whatever reasons have not had the shots yet can come to town and take advantage of this free service. Some in our community just simply have not had a chance to do this yet for various reasons. A few lack transportation and if anyone has this problem just give the city a ring. Mayor Brannan has said to just call her, and I will say that too. If you need a ride to the “shots” call me on my 857-2438 land line. If you can wedge in between my phone trollers who want me to buy extended car warranties, give money to the police or buy burial insurance.

The point I am making is this: regardless of why you have not had the shot, now is the time to get it. They are generally without any mishaps. Mine and Pat’s (we got the Pfizer) were without pain or any side effects. I guarantee you that after the shots are finished you will feel a great relief knowing you have not only protected yourself but have shown the love and respect you owe your family and loved ones. And by helping corral this deadly killer virus you will be doing your part in bringing our country back to normal.

I know we live in an age of skepticism and scoffing, particularly at science and politics. There are even public pronouncements of how these shots may be tainted or there are markers which would aid “evil” people to mark us like cattle. Some radio and TV “preachers” speak against the shots. Do not for a moment believe these mistaken people. We all have to step out on faith about some things we have no control over— every day. Take it from me, a pharmacist, there is not a scientific, political, or religious reason to fear these life-saving vaccines. None!

Let us all “man-up” and do the right thing here. And remember, if you are going into a public place, it shows a degree of maturity on your part to just slip that mask on—one more time—and respect and protect your family, neighbors, and friends. And let us all try to fill our churches and thank God we even have these shots to make it possible to put this disease behind us.
