School Hoping for New Transportation Bond

bond from 2020 which is set to expire in June, so there would be no increase in taxes. However, upon the final payment of the 2020 bond, if the new bond does not pass, taxes would be reduced by about 1%, Hiatt said.

The plan is to purchase at least three route buses, with one being handicap accessible.

“We need a handicap-accessible bus,” Hiatt said.

He said the two oldest routes buses are worn out and need to go. He said one of the buses has been at a repair shop all year.

“They’re old,” Hiatt said. “They served their purpose, but they’re just worn out. They were on the roughest routes, and it just beat them to death.”

The matter was discussed and voted on by the Allen Board of Education during a special called meeting November 20th.

At the board’s regular meeting Monday, it was mentioned that Board Clerk Ron Batey will be seeking re-election for Seat 5, and will have a challenger, Calem Woodward.

The election is set for April 1.

Also during the meeting, Hiatt spoke to the board about Allen Schools’ early dismissal for December 20th at noon.

“So, I know the elementary has all their Christmas programs and parties that morning all the way up to noon, and then we’ll feed them and send them home. So, we’ll get the message out to everybody, because we can’t drop kids off without knowing someone’s home. So, we’ll have to make sure someone is home before we drive off and leave them.”

Hiatt then spoke about projects that would be going on over the Christmas break.

He said all the fluorescent lighting in Allen Schools will be replaced with LED lighting. As part of a rebate program, the lighting must be replaced by December 30th.

“So, when we get back, we’ll have LED in every spot on campus, other than the stadium lights,” Hiatt said.

Hiatt indicated the LED lighting would result in lower electric bills.
