On to Regional - Boys Win District Championship
The last home game of the season found both Allen teams in the district finals. The Allen girls had an off night falling 50-31 and the Allen men outgunned Crowder 69-41. The season continues at Quinton, the site of the Regional Tournament. The Lady Mustangs face Cave Springs at 1:30 and the Mustangs also face Cave Springs at 7:30. Tickets may be purchased at the gate.
First the good news. Garrett Nix seemed like he had something to prove scoring 43 points to lead all scorers and outscoring Crowder himself. “He had an overall great game, and the other guys just kept feeding the ball, it was a good game for us,” said Coach Greg Mills.
The first half was all Allen going into the half with a 37- 13 lead.
Crowder made a slight run in the third quarter, but the Mustangs bounced back to life to end the fourth quarter with a 20-10 run. Brayden Tatum added 15 points for the Mustangs. “From this point things just get harder, there is always someone out there that will surprise you. We just need to play hard and get the job done,” said Coach Mills.
The Lady Mustangs came out of the game Saturday looking like they had been a boxing match. Ava Laden is lost for the season with a shoulder injury, and if you scanned the bench, you saw players with ice packs on their heads, ankles, and knees. “Quinton is a very physical team and that night we just weren’t able to get up off the floor and fight back,” said Coach Slabaugh. “We have to put that game behind us and move on. I think we match up well with Cave Springs, we are still expecting to make a deep run in the playoffs.” The Lady Mustangs, who are usually good rebounders, were outrebounded and the threepoint shots were not landing at all. Cherish Woodward led Allen with 11 points, Stoney Cully 6, Brooklyn Sanders 6, Maggie Yarbrough 4, Kaylee Davis 3, and Ava Laden 1.
Allen renowned historian Steve Bullard put out a list of scoring leaders from Allen. The Mustangs are district champs behind Garrett Nix’s 43-point outburst. Allen beat Crowder 6941 to advance to next week’s regional winner’s bracket game against Cave Springs.
In case you’re wondering, Greg Mills holds the record for most points in a game with 52 against Wayne in 1982.
Don’t have great records on basketball, but it appears Nix is next highest with 43. After that, who knows? Chad Milne had 40 against Stratford
Garrett Nix scored 43 points Saturday night photo by Wes Edens a few years ago. Derek Melton put 39 on Asher. And Brayden Tatum had 38 in regionals last season. Did any of the other former Allen legends that you know of threaten any of these records?
