One Pharmacist’s View
Can it be? Spring?
Driving around Allen on my golf cart I see some green grass. Testing the waters so speak. Also, Fruitless Pears are about to bloom and light everything up with their colors. And some of our winter birds will be packing up and going back north with stories of a very cold time in Oklahoma. But nearly 50 inches of snow covered some parts of Colorado and Wyoming this past weekend. I-80 closed for a while as did I-25. But while the heavy snow tore down powerlines and made life hard for the folks up in that area, the temperatures stayed well above the dangerous temps we all suffered in February.
Some yucky sites around Allen. Unchecked liter in ditches, worn-out washers and driers piled on porches or just dragged out to the front yards. Untagged yard cars. I guess the property owners hope someone will come by and clean it up for them. We did not used to have to look at this in Allen. People were made to clean it up or the City would do it for them at the property owner’s expense.
It has been a long while since we have seen much attention paid by the city to these unsightly piles of trash and junk that liter many parts of Allen — parts of town that were at one time pretty nicely kept. Let us hope that better days are ahead as more attention is given to these (in some cases) abandoned properties and trailer houses. And it will not hurt to remind your own city councilman that you noticed.
We have come to expect much from our town and as a matter of fact receive exceptionally good care and service for the most part from our city. I for one appreciated the fact that during the recent cold emergency of February the city was able to keep our utilities (our water) flowing and safe. City employees were immensely helpful to individuals who got froze up and needed help. But mostly it was their preventive maintenance that protected us. Emergency generators at the wells. Making sure exposed pipes were insulated in advance as a result of being observant. Some nearby communities who had not paid attention are still wondering how they can ever get all their systems back in service.
On the Covid note, who has had their shots? They are being giving around here and if you need one just watch the Allen Advocate. They will post times and places where you can get this free lifesaving vaccination. Some are hesitant to get this shot because they have read or heard that the vaccination can mark you with a code of some sort that enables “somebody somewhere” to tag you. Another (more reasonable) fear is that the shot might make you sick. The vaccinations have been well tested out and are safe. Just step up and get yours. Let us get rid of this killer — this worldwide Pandemic.
Some other signs of March are that the “Big Dance” is underway. It will be interesting to see just which is the best basketball team. We can all watch this safely. Also did you see how excited some of the press got when former President Trump was spotted traveling in a Cessna twin engine jet? Excited because they see it as a sign of his being cut down to size. I wonder what happens if he starts driving himself around in a regular Chevy or Ford? Oh Me! Such Hate!
I hope you are enjoying the struggles of spring, as I am. And be sure and go to Church Sunday. And yes, I do enjoy hearing from you, my readers.
