Mid-Winter Blues

Posted in:

When a kid I nearly always welcomed a good snow. Even if it meant wading through the cow lot doing the milking and taking care of ungrateful livestock under bad conditions. Maybe close the school? For sure it changed the looks of things and hid the liter that covered our Oklahoma countryside. At least for a little while. But even then, most of our “snows” were more of a fizzle than anything.

I had a picture for years of my young son standing on the front porch all bundled up in boots, coat and hat, steadying a sled as he gazed hopefully across the landscape at little snowflakes which melted as they fell. He was despondent. No sledding. No school closure. Just like we are during this winter’s offering of drizzle, failed weather forecasts and mud. Not much snow. Leave the sled hanging in the barn.

The dozen or so people watching the Oscars Sunday mostly watched the “end of celebrity” as we knew it in America. Not many people saw Brad Pitt denounce America in some way or another. We did see on the news that we had servicemen injured because of Iran’s attack on our bases over there. Earlier, it was announced by the President that we had suffered no casualties in the attack only to hear later that we had 100 troops injured. TBI’s they said. The “Traumatic Brain Injuries” were caused, so the report went on, by troops seeing bombs going off which caused dizziness and headaches. This, they went on can bring on early Alzheimer’s dementia and other bad memories. I wonder who had written up this story. Sounded like a squad of Oklahoma City Lawyers on TV making a liability commercial.

Most of us were brought up in a time when we learned that sometimes bad stuff happens. For instance, when I was a boy over at Stonewall, the kid living down the street got ran over and killed. It was a bad thing to see and for sure I was upset. My mom was sympathetic and gave me a nice hug and a pat but when my dad came in and was told of my distress, he acquired that fatherly look he got sometimes when things were going wrong and told me, “You need to just get over it.” So, I did. I always tried to remember that when bad stuff happened, like when I was in the military, I knew I just needed to get over it. And I always did.

Election results are already out from Dixville Notch, New Hampshire. And guess what? Amy Klobuchar got over 60% of the vote. Wow, I thought as I tried to soak all this in and remember who Amy Klobuchar is, sounds like Amy will be our new President. I reconsidered this when I read on and found that Dixville Notch only has 12 registered voters which means President Amy only has 8 votes. I noted that Bernie had out gained Biden by one vote. Who knew?

Oh well. Reading on I see that all the insects in the world are going extinct. This is from global warming which is caused by the sinful nature of mankind and his polluting of the world. No insects, the birds sadly die off and, of course, we do too. Oh wait. Amid losing our insects and birds and our own lives, there is a big plague of locusts in the Middle East. Wherever that is. Worse they’ve seen since Moses confronted the Pharaoh of Egypt about some political problems concerning the Jews.

It looks like our winter is sort just plugging along. As noted earlier in this article, if you like ice cold rain, spasmodic cold fronts, dreary skies and no snow, why you got it made. I remember as a kid that I loved for it to snow. Snow can mean, no school today. Snow can cover up tons of ugly liter that inhabits our beautiful plains and provide all sorts of good play areas for sliding, snowballs, snowmen and of course, sledding.

In any case, you should go to church Sunday and forget about this other “stuff.” Have a good week.
