Man who killed Allen couple charged with murder
in Pontotoc County, Chambers later stopped at a residence in Allen, again asking for gasoline.
The resident contacted Allen Police Chief Darrell Armstrong, but Armstrong said it was about 15 minutes between the time the resident encountered Chambers and when he texted Armstrong.
“At 11:02 p.m., they texted me saying there was a guy running around town looking for gas in a white car,” Armstrong said.
Armstrong said he responded and drove all around town looking, but didn’t see anyone fitting the description.
Additionally, Armstrong responded to the call at the Pelitis’ residence to let deputies there know that a person fitting the description of the suspect was reportedly seen in Allen after he left the Pelitis.
Via a television news interview, Hughes County Sheriff TJ Teague said after his deputies received a BOLO from the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office, his office received a call at about 1:30 a.m. from a woman in Non who said a man was knocking on her door.
“My two deputies went down, they located the car and the subject that matched the BOLO,” Teague told KOCO News. “When they made contact with the subject, he took off running and jumped a fence and ran off ...”
A manhunt ensued near Non, which involved multiple agencies.
Later in the morning, after sunrise, Chambers reportedly attempted to steal a Non resident’s vehicle from her driveway, before a verbal altercation ensued between Chambers and the resident and Chambers left the scene. The resident then called authorities.
Teague said lawenforcement officers responded and began searching nearby vacant properties.
The manhunt involved law-enforcement officers from numerous agencies who were using drones and K-9 partners to locate Chambers.
Johnston County Sheriff Gary W. Dodd said the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office requested any available assistance from nearby agencies, so he sent three K-9 deputies (deputies with K-9 partners).
Chambers was soon located at a vacant structure and taken into custody.
A Durant police officer with a K-9 partner was part of the manhunt, and helped locate a gun near where Chambers was found.
“At the time of the actual apprehension, there were two Johnston County K-9 deputies, a Durant police officer (with) a K-9, and then, I think, two or three Hughes County deputies there as well,” Dodd said. “So, Hughes County, Johnston County and Durant PD actually took him into custody. And once he was secured, the Durant K-9 officer there used his dog to do an article search of the area, close to where he (Chambers) was apprehended, and he was able to backtrack that individual with the help of the landowner and recover the firearm.”
Pontotoc County District Attorney Erik Johnson said the firearm -- a .22 caliber pistol will undergo a ballistics test to determine if it was the gun used in the murders.
Chambers was taken to the Hughes County Jail, then transferred to the Pontotoc County Justice Center where he remains without bond.
Agencies that responded to the manhunt for Chambers included the Hughes County Sheriff’s Department, Johnston County Sheriff’s Department, Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Department, Chickasaw Nation Lighthorse Police Department, Chickasaw Nation Emergency Management, Pontotoc County Emergency Mangement, Choctaw Nation Lighthorse Police Department, Coal County Sheriff’s Department, Durant Police Department, Allen Police Department and Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
