Man who killed Allen couple charged with murder

A man who reportedly drove through multiple counties killing three people, including two Allen residents, was charged with murder last week.

Richard Dewayne Chambers, 42, Oklahoma City, was charged December 19th in Pontotoc County District Court with two counts of first-degree murder - deliberate intent.

Chambers is suspected of killing an elderly couple, 84-yearold Robert Peliti and 70-year-old Jackie Peliti, in their own home on County Road 1512 the night of December 17th.

The murders of the Pelitis were reportedly part of a multi-county killing spree, and Chambers was taken into custody Wednesday morning after an hours-long manhunt. Chambers was captured near Non, a community in southern Hughes County, at around 8:15 a.m.

Chambers is also suspected of killing a woman in Midwest City prior to the homicides near Allen. He then reportedly took the woman’s car and drove through Pottawatomie and Pontotoc counties, knocking on doors and asking residents for gasoline for the vehicle he was driving, according to Pontotoc County Undersheriff Arnold Scott.

The homicide of the woman in Midwest City wasn’t discovered until after the Pelitis were killed, however.

Chambers traveled through Ada and reportedly stopped at atleast one residence. Ada police interacted with Chambers that night, but no arrest was made. Police did, however, get the tag number of the vehicle, but did not check Chambers’ identification.

Arnold said Chambers reportedly told police his name was Richard Chamberlain.

Chambers eventually left Ada and drove east on state Highway 1. He reportedly stopped at a residence near the home of the victims, which is just off SH-1 between Allen and Ada -- at about 10:50 p.m., and asked for fuel, but the resident said she didn’t have any. She reportedly told Chambers that her neighbors, the Pelitis, may have some fuel, Scott said.

Scott said the lady, who was home alone, later became worried and called her boyfriend, who lives in Ada.

According to a court affidavit filed by OSBI Special Agent Heather Cropper, the lady watched as Chambers drove a “light colored Lexus” from her driveway to the Pelitis’ driveway.

“As (she) watched the Lexus remain stationary in the Pelitis’ driveway, she called her boyfriend ... and requested he come to her home,” Cropper said. “Approximately 10 to 15 minutes later, (the boyfriend) arrived and observed the Lexus still parked in the Pelitis’ driveway.”

Cropper said the man drove to the Pelitis’ residence, parked behind the vehicle in the driveway, which he confirmed to be a white Lexus with an Oklahoma license plate, then approached the Pelitis’ front door. “As he looked into the unobstructed front window of the home and knocked on their front door, (the man) observed a silhouetted figure move from one side of house’s interior towards the other side,” Cropper said. “(The man) knocked again and noticed the back door to the residence was ajar.”

Cropper said the man returned to his vehicle in front of the residence, and as he entered it, he saw the brake lights and reverse lights of the Lexus illuminate.

“The Lexus turned right toward a group of hay bales, then turned again onto County Road 1512, and once more onto Highway 1 East, headed in an easterly direction,” Cropper said. “(The woman), who was on the phone with (her boyfriend) during encounter, hung up and called 911. (The boyfriend) waited outside until (law-enforcement officers arrived).”

Pontotoc County sheriff’s deputies and Chickasaw Nation Lighthorse police responded.

“(The law enforcement officers) entered the already ajar back door and discovered Robert Peliti sitting on the living room couch, covered in blood and in physical distress,” Cropper said. “Jackie Peliti was discovered lying (on her back) on the living room floor in front of Robert. (She) was obviously deceased with an apparent head wound. Robert Peliti, who was still alive, suffered from several apparent gunshot wounds to his upper body and head. Medical personnel responded to the scene and transported Robert Peliti to Ada Mercy Hospital, where he died a short time later. Hospital staff determined that Robert had suffered several gunshot wounds which ultimately proved fatal. Investigators observed and recovered several .22 caliber bullet casings and loose live rounds inside the Pelitis’ residence.”

Scott said the description given by the neighbor -- a male with dreadlocks wearing a red hoodie and driving a white Lexus -- fit the description of the person that Ada police had dealt with on a suspicious person call earlier that night.

Deputies checked the call notes and saw that Ada police had entered the license plate number of the white Lexus, as well as the owner information.

Sheriff John Christian said a BOLO (be on the lookout) was immediately sent out with the vehicle and description of the suspect.

Scott said the sheriff’s office contacted the Midwest City Police Department and requested they do a welfare check on the owner of the vehicle that Chambers was driving, Annie Brown, who lived on Locust Lane in Midwest City.

Scott said police responded to the residence and received no answer, so they left. Scott said that about an hour and fortyfive minutes later, the officers were told to return to Brown’s house and make contact with someone because of the seriousness of the crimes in Pontotoc County.

According to Midwest City police, officers responded to Brown’s residence, entered, and discovered Brown, 62, deceased with “what appeared to be a gunshot wound.”

Midwest City police discovered that Chambers had been living in Brown’s backyard and had “taken Brown’s vehicle several hours prior to the discovery in Pontotoc County.” Scott said Midwest City authorities spoke with Brown’s next of kin, who said Chambers had been living in Brown’s backyard -- reportedly in a shed.

“Subsequent investigation by Midwest City police located recorded surveillance video showing Chambers loading property into Brown’s Lexus and leaving her residence in the vehicle a short time after two gunshots were heard,” Cropper said. “Midwest City investigators recovered .22 caliber bullet casings from the scene and also learned that a neighbor had loaned Chambers a .22 caliber handgun in exchange for housesitting. Midwest City police, who were familiar with Chambers, provided a photograph of Chambers sporting dreadlocks.”

Christian said the BOLO was then updated to include Chambers’ identity and photo.
