Lady Mustangs bring home Championship Trophy from Indianola
Everyone contributed earning the Lady Mustangs the Indianola Tournament Championship Saturday.
It came down to the wire on Thursday, as the Lady Mustangs grabbed the victory in walk-off fashion, 5-4, over Quinton. The game was tied at four in the bottom of the seventh when Kaylee Davis singled, scoring one run.
Davis faced 34 batters and struck out 12 batters on the day. The righty also surrendered nine hits and three runs over seven innings while walking one.
Quinton was the first to get on the board scoring one run.. Lilly Matthews grounded out, which helped Allen Varsity Lady Mustangs tie the game at three in the bottom of the sixth.
A single by gave Quinton the lead, 4-3, in the top of the seventh.
Allen captured the lead, 5-4, in the bottom of the seventh after Isabel Valesquez grounded out, and Davis singled, each scoring one run. Ava Laden, Davis, and Kryslyn Stephens each collected two hits for Allen with each of them collecting doubles. Matthews, Davis, and Valesquez each drove in one run and Kayla Nickell stole two bases. Stephens and Laden each had a stolen base. The Lady Mustangs stole four bases in the game.
The team traveled back to Indianola Saturday for a slate of 2 games.
The Lady Mustangs took down Porter Varsity Lady Pirates 10-6 on Saturday.
Allen opened the scoring in the first after a dropped third strike scored one run.
The Lady Mustangs scored seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the second inning. Isabel Valesquez singled, scoring one run, Kaylee Davis drew a walk, scoring one run, Kayla Nickell singled, scoring one run, Ava Laden singled, scoring two runs, and Kryslyn Stephens singled, scoring two runs.
Allen Varsity Lady Mustangs added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning after Lilly Matthews grounded out, and Laden singled, each scoring one run.
Davis stepped in the circle first for Allen Varsity Lady Mustangs. She allowed five hits and six runs over four innings, striking out four and walking nine.
The Lady Mustangs collected 11 hits in the game. Laden, Cherish Woodward, and Nickell each collected two hits for Allen Varsity Lady Mustangs. Laden led Allen Varsity Lady Mustangs with three runs batted in. They went 2-for-2 on the day. Laden stole two bases. The team stole four bases in the game. Allen didn’t commit a single error in the field. Addison Prentice had the most chances in the field with five.
In the Championship game the Lady Mustangs faced the host Indianola.
Despite trailing by as many as six runs, Allen rallied to top Indianola 8-6 on Saturday.
The Lady Mustangs didn’t take the lead until the sixth inning. The game was tied at six in the top of the sixth when Kayla Nickell hit an inside the park home run, scoring two runs.
Indianola jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the first inning scoring two runs.
Allen scored five runs on five hits in the top of the third inning. Kaylee Davis doubled, scoring one run, Nickell singled, scoring one run, Lilly Matthews tripled, scoring two runs, and Ava Laden singled, scoring one run.
The Lady Mustangs made the score 8-6 in the top of the sixth after Cherish Woodward singled, scoring one run, and Nickell hit an inside the park home run, scoring two runs.
Davis was in the circle first for Allen. She allowed nine hits and six runs (three earned) over six innings, striking out seven and walking none.
Allen piled up 15 hits in the game. Laden led with four hits in four at bats and four RBIs. Nickell drove the middle of the lineup, leading Allen with three runs batted in. The catcher went 3-for-4 on the day. Davis and Woodward each collected multiple hits for Allen Varsity Lady Mustangs. Laden, Kryslyn Stephens, and Addison Prentice each stole multiple bases for Allen. The Lady Mustangs stole seven bases in the game. Allen Varsity Lady Mustangs turned one double play in the game.
