The study, completed in 2022, found that an estimated 17.7 million individuals who drink alcohol at the same rate. This comes as a dramatic change from 1992 research that identified less than one million “nearly every day” marijuana users.
“A good 40% of current cannabis users are using it daily or near daily, a pattern that is more associated with tobacco use than typical alcohol use,” said the study’s author, Jonathan Caulkins, a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University.
