Allen/Calvin Softball head to Pocola for Regionals

The Allen/Calvin team traveled to Coalgate for a District Class 2A battle last Thursday. Despite outhitting the Coalgate team, they came up short 8-7 in the game.

Kaylee Davis had the hot bat going 3 for 4 with a double and 2 singles. Things looked promising as we got on the board first. Ava Laden opened with a single and scored on the double by Davis. Then Cherish Woodward hit a 2 RBI double. Coalgate got even in their half of the inning and took the lead in the second inning. In the 4th Davis added 2 more RBIs on her single again knotting the score at 5. Coalgate took the 8-5 lead into the seventh. The Allen/ Calvin team mounted a 2-run rally but fell short losing 8-7. Woodward pitched 5 innings giving up 9 hits and 8 runs striking out 1. Davis pitched 1 inning of relief. On the same day it was different team same outcome as we fell7-6 to Tishomingo. This time freshman Kayla Nickell had the hot bat going 3(2 doubles) for 3 and 1 RBI and crossed the plate 3 times. Kryslyn Stephens also went 3 for 3. Ava Laden had a double and a single and Kaylee Davis had 3 RBIs in the game. Allen/Calvin took the lead in the 3rd on a Nickell double and a Winningham single each scoring a run. Stephens took the circle pitching 2 innings giving up 6 hits and 3 runs striking out 1 and walking one. Davis also pitched 2 innings, faced 14 batters, giving up 6 hits and 4 runs. The team had 12 hits in the game and Tishomingo also had 12 hits.

Friday the team hosted Wetumka at the Calvin field and came out with a 18-3 win. The 12 run first inning was fueled by Nickell’s single, Woodward’s triple, Winningham’s triple, Ladens double and some timely walks and singles scattered in. The scoring barrage continued in the second scoring six runs. This time Davis doubled, Winningham singled Matthews and Norman were hit by pitches.

Stephens picked up the win, surrendering 5 hits and 3 runs struck out 1 and walked 5. The team had 11 hits in the game. Winningham led the hitters with 3 hits on 3 appearances. Laden, Nickell and Winningham each had 3 RBI’s. Davis and Nickell each stole 3 bases.

In the final warm up before regional action the Lady Mustangs traveled to Roff, dropping a 10-6 game. Laden and Woodward each picked up over the fence homeruns in the game. Stephens surrendered 3 hits and eight runs over 2 1/3 innings. Laden, Woodward, and the return of Addison Prentice after an injury each drove in 2 runs. Laden (3) and Woodward (2) each stole multiple bases. Winningham also had a double in the game.

After a rainout in the regular season finale the team is head to the far away land of Pocola for the Regional tournament. We will face Warner at 2 p.m. The top of the bracket Pocola and Savanna will face off at noon. Winners play at 6 and losers at 4 p.m. A sole winner from this tournament will advance to the Super-Regionals next week.
