Allen Schools to purchase new buses if bond passes

Allen Public Schools is hoping residents will vote to pass a transportation bond, the funds of which will be used to purchase new school buses and they are stressing that there will be no projected tax increase.

If passed, the bond will replace a previous transportation bond from 2020.

The vote will take place at regular voting locations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. next Tuesday, February 11th. The matter will appear on the ballot as “Allen School District Proposition 1.”

According to Allen Schools, if passed, the funds will be used “to provided safe and dependable transportation for students.”

Superintendent Jeff Hiatt said the school system is planning to purchase at least two new route busses and a wheelchair accessible school bus if the matter passes. He said there are children at Allen Schools who are disabled, and the system needs to have the ability to transport them to and from school.

Hiatt indicated that, after purchasing two route buses and a wheelchair accessible bus, the situation will be reassessed, but there should be enough funds leftover to purchase at least one additional bus.

Hiatt indicated that the funds would help replace an aging fleet of buses that are worn out. Several buses are from 14 to 17 years old.
