Allen Memorial Day Service Monday
Memorial Day, this year on Monday, May 26th, is a federal holiday set aside for people to remember those who died while serving their country in the US Armed Forces.
Originally known as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, May 30th was designated as a day for the nation to decorate the graves of that recent war’s dead with flowers. By the 20th century Memorial Day was extended to honor all Americans who died while in military service. It was unofficially expanded to encompass all deceased loved ones during the mid-century. In 1971 the date was changed to be the last Monday in May in order to create a threeday weekend.
The town of Allen continues this great tradition of honoring our military, both past and present, with a service at the Allen Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Jeff Maloy will be speaking.
This is followed by the hamburger/hot dog luncheon at the Allen Masonic Lodge on West Broadway. The event is open to all area residents as a time to thank the men and women who have served our country, both in times of war and peace.
In case of inclement weather the observance will be held inside the Lodge building.
