Allen City Council Meets
The monthly regular meeting of the Allen town council was held Monday, March 6. Members present were Rhonda Skelton, Dianna Brannan, Delwayne Johnson and Wendell Smith. April Whitehead was absent. This was the last regular meeting that Johnson, Smith and Whitehead will represent their wards. Braylee Dickerson will occupy Whitehead’s seat and the 2 other seats are currently empty. If you are in their wards and are a qualified candidate let city hall know of your interest in filling those seats. New councilmembers will be appointed at a later date.
Nathan Niblett representing his Internet Provider Company asked the city to use the alleys and right of ways in the future for enlarging his service area. In return he will pay a 2% franchise to the city and observe all rules that govern the use of the areas. The council agreed as they want internet available whoever wants it in town. BLS Internet has had clients in Allen for over a year and we have been given good reports about his service.
The Fire Department request county tax for a Custom Skid Unit. The unit will use a foam system which works great for auto fires and other uses.
The police filed 3 reports, drug/narcotic violation, larceny/theft and a warrant for another agency. Twenty-three citations were written: 14 speeding, 2 permit a dangerous dog to be outside proper enclosure, 2 failed to obey traffic sign, 1 reckless driving, 2 operating a vehicle without proper license plate or decal, 2 owner operator fails to comply with compulsory insurance laws. Chief Edens noted we are having some problem with a group of juveniles; he is working with juvenile services and law enforcement to bring them to justice.
City Manager Calem Woodward gave updates on what projects they are working on. Drainage is a major problem which leads to our second problem street repair. Right now, short term corrections are being made, through trial and error the major holes have seemed to work best by being repaired by concrete. They have used several bags to repair the biggest two holes on Broadway. They have began spraying weed at the walking track, cemetery, park and medians. This will help with mowing as the spring and summer growing season hits.
A second Saturday clean-up day will be scheduled for Saturday, April 25th from 9-2 at the town’s sewer plant. A charge of $10 per load will help offset the expense of swapping out dumpsters. A spring clean-up date is being looked at for later in May.
Delwayne Johnson made his last motion to adjourn, seconded by Smith.
