George Washington, touted as our greatest President, also may have been the highest paid, according to a new book, Presidential Trivia, by Richard Lederer. According to Lederer’s book, our fi rst president’s $25,000 annual salary would translate to $531,000 today, a full $131,000 more than we are paying Donald Trump.

Lederer has assembled some fascinating material about the presidents, their vice presidents and their fi rst ladies.

Some little-known presidential facts the author has dug up are: seven U.S. Presidents actually were not born American citizens, another seven legally changed their names from the original on their birth certifi cates, including Gerald Ford (born Leslie Lynch King, Jr.,) and Bill Clinton (born William Jefferson Blythe IV). One of our presidents spoke English as a second language. It was Martin Van Buren, who grew up speaking Dutch and continued to speak Dutch at home with his wife.

Many of our presidents have written memoirs, but only one ever published a novel and only one ever received a patent for an invention.

Another president tried to ban football, probably an impeachable offense today.

We also have our presidents to thank for some of our great American expressions. Teddy Roosevelt, a coffee fancier, was the one who uttered, “Good to the last drop,” to describe a cup of Maxwell House coffee. The company picked that up and is still using it today.

Some trivia: I passed this sign on a neighborhood grocery store several times while I was in Washington, D.C. recently. “Coffee, Donut, Hot Dog, Soda, Dry Cleaning, Food Service.” I had a great urge to stop in and inquire if ONLY one donut or ONLY one hot dog could be ordered. The sign intrigued me.
