Mike Stoops Leaving Norman?
We’ve all been watching The Donald Trump Show real close. When and if he is going to be shown the door? Will he really be impeached? Will he be reelected? But enough of that. We have more important fish to fry. The annual Red River Showdown was played Saturday. It was expected to be a blowout by many of us experts. After all, Texas hadn’t done much all year and even had trouble winning over hapless Kansas. There was lots of grumbling over OU’s defensive efforts but shucks, our all powerful offense would just have to, as usual, score a few extra touchdowns to compensate.
I couldn’t go to the game this year. I had the tickets and I had a way but a recent bout with an ailing heart made me stay in Allen and watch all my kids go down HWY-48 without me. And the game went on, too. Everything went fine for a little bit. We scored and well, you know what happened. By the time the 4th quarter arrived we were 3 TDs behind. Not to worry? Well, I did. But Kyler Murray took to the fi eld, and the fastest thing out there was that clock. Time and history were not on our side. But with a little over 2 minutes to go we had scored thrice and the score was 45 all.
As the Sooner fans continued their celebration of this miracle come back by their beloved quarterback and his offense, the Texas Longhorns trotted back out on the field. Mike Stoops and his disrespected defense shuffled out too. Worry and fear swept the Sooner stands as each one tried to reassure the other of what can Texas do? Only 2 minutes or so left to play. What they did was march down the field, and when they got the position they wanted, run the clock on down to 9 seconds, kick a winning field goal and the game was over. We lost.
Many think it was the kick that ended Mike Stoops job as Defensive Coach. Perhaps it is and to most it seems most fitting that Mike should take his bag of tricks and try something else. Selling door to door comes to mind. Lincoln Riley’s team deserves better and frankly, so do I. Just sayin’. I fl icked the dial over to the OSU/ ISU game just in time to watch a Cyclone guy drag three of my Cowboys about 5 yards into the end zone. So much for any solace being created in Stillwater. Just so I can quit this on a positive note let me just be reminded that my Allen Mustangs whipped it on Liberty 46-12 Friday night. Atta way to go, Mustangs. Also need to say our Mustang Band is looking better this year. Won some trophies last week marching in Tishomingo.
I don’t get out as much as I used to since I had something called a Myocardial Infarction about three weeks ago. Sure let the air out of my tire. And now, as if that weren’t enough I have done something to my right knee. May have to make another trip up to the VA in Oklahoma City this week and have them see if there are any old bullet holes in there or something. Probably just more old age.
I like to climb in my little golf cart and drive around Allen. Most noteworthy thing in town is the new gym construction. Built at the Eastern Edge of Downtown it makes a nice addition to the looks of down town. I think the new gym will be beautiful and I look forward to having it finished in 2019. I hope they don’t forget to bring a popcorn machine over or perhaps buy a new one as I am anxious to not only attend a ballgame in there, I want to be able to buy a bag of popcorn and a bottle of Diet Coke in its spacious lobby.
Meanwhile, we have a lot more Football games ahead and we need to support our teams. And can basketball be far away? I hope not. Be sure and go to church Sunday.
