Checking up on Allen

Posted in:

When I hear gunfi re in Allen, it’s usually some old boy that has had his patience stretched thin by a gopher that took up residence in his yard. That’s OK with me but like Sunday, a new and ambitious gopher moved into my backyard throwing dirt and making holes like he owned the place. I couldn’t locate my pistol right away and soon got distracted by other problems. The gopher is expanding his property even as I write. I gave him some “stuff” to chew on and we’ll just see how he likes that.

Pat and I drove down to Boggy Depot Sunday. I had heard improvements had been made, new signage and such. But there wasn’t much of anything going on except old Clear Boggy Creek was really rolling. Two campsites were occupied in the vast campgrounds and there was nothing to show where Mr. Butterfield drove his stagecoaches in from St. Louis. While this was for sure a historic spot in pre-statehood days there isn’t much to see anymore except green grass and brush.

Plenty to talk about in our two cities. Oklahoma City and Tulsa. It really is getting “bad” in OKC and I hear the same things are happening in Tulsa. We see the carnage on our TVs every day and I can’t help but sympathize with the ordinary people. How should these people feel when stray bullets leave punctures in their walls and in some cases, an innocent child dead. Guilty only of sleeping in his own bed. How about the guy who was sitting on his front porch and drew the attention of some “drive-by shooters.” He may have been innocent, but he is just as dead. Robberies of stores and their clerks who are simply trying to make a living are everyday occurrences. I will start calling Oklahoma City, “Dodge City” instead of “the City.”

Last week I mentioned the Gulf of Hormuz. This narrow neck of water serves as a passage for about 1/3rd of the world’s oil from Arabia. While we are stationing a stronger fleet of ships there, including the Carrier Force USS Ronald Reagan, it will be very easy for Iran to in fact close the Gulf. All they have to do is a little shooting and the people who insure these big Super Tankers will cancel the insurance on their ships if they go in there. Well, there it is! Iran has already fi red on about 6 of those tankers and probably will do more.

Iran hates America and will do whatever to harm us. And Ramadan is upon us again, a holiday I didn’t even know existed until a few years ago. To bring his people into a “closer walk with God” the head man over there has ordered all Iranian men to stop looking at Women during Ramadan. Well by golly, that ought to do it.

And while we are still allowed to enjoy a “peek” now and then just remember to go to church next Sunday. You’ll be glad you did.
