Winter is here and with it comes the cold days and times that keep us indoors but also, winter brings us some good days, not so cold or windy. For hunters this may well be the best time of the year. And while we may miss seeing the flowers and colors of summer, we can take comfort that spring is coming. On December 21 we reach a thing we call the winter equinox which defines the days that winter has remaining. The days won’t keep on getting shorter. From that point on, the sun starts its slow way back north, making our days grow longer again. So, we can soon start looking forward to more daylight and the sure hope of another spring.

I noticed on my gas bill this month that the average temperature in the preceding month was one-degree cooler this year than last year. Yet I read in a newspaper that we were more than one degree warmer. Global warming. Like a religion, global warmers promote the facts as they see them. I suppose therefore that this is why we (the laity) are treated with such eye-rolling scorn by the more enlightened “warmers.” Perhaps we will never understand why Northern parts of our globe are suffering from warming while other parts may not be, but I feel we will survive it—somehow. Meanwhile, local weather is what we see, feel and respect.

Speaking of respectable I want to congratulate my Sooners on an excellent football season. You can never tell who is going to win any football game but by golly we did win the Big 12 title. Just how well we will do against LSU is yet to be seen but I have hopes. OSU will play another SEC team, Texas A&M, down in Houston later this month. Both ought to be good games.

On another sports note, I was able to attend a game down at the new gym. Wow. What a difference facility makes. A lot of pride in this facility by our community and I know this will be benefi cial to our community in years to come. I was very pleased with the way our players (boys and girls) appeared and conducted themselves on the floor. Good job coaches. And lastly, I want to say something about how this new gym dresses up our campus as well as our downtown. It just looks great.

One more thing. Last Sunday the First Baptist Church held their 38th annual “Hanging of the Green” Christmas program. It was beautiful how each part of the program was closely linked to the birth of Christ. There will be programs, plays and all sorts of things done here in our area to celebrate this joyous season. Programs are coming up at the various churches and at our school which, if we would take the time to attend, are meaningful to our Christian Heritage and I urge each of you to keep an eye out for time and dates. You’ll enjoy them and in the case of our school kids, they’ll appreciate your attendance and support.

Have a good week and don’t forget to go to church Sunday.
