Mustangs hold Media Day

Coaches, players and parents alike braved the heat Saturday, August 17th , to attend the Allen Mustangs football annual media day.

The event, held at the football field, allows news organizations to photograph the players and learn more about the team.

Leading the helm is new head coach, Rob Green, who has more than three decades of coaching experience, including at the collegiate level.

The Mustangs had conducted six practices prior to media day.

“We did a little scrimmaging today,” Green said Saturday. “I was fairly pleased with what we were able to accomplish. If you look at it, everything is new to them: terminology, formations, defense, whatever it may be. And, along with three out of fi ve coaches being brand new (to the players), I’m fairly pleased. We’re throwing a lot at them at one time.”

Green does have expectations for the upcoming season.

“Number one, I want us to be competitive in every game,” he said. “One of the keys to doing that is to continuously get better in all facets of the game.”

Green also realizes the timing for a new coach wasn’t ideal for the players, or for him.

“They’d already gone through spring ball and everything,” he said. “So I’ve kind of gone into the situation blind.”

The Mustangs’ offense will be led by senior quarterback Kason Smith (#14).

Besides Smith, Green has also been impressed by seniors Colton Dyer (#53) and Colton Howard (#70). Dyer is 6’2,” 265 lbs. and will play offensive line and defensive end. Howard is 6’, 270 lbs. and will play offensive line and defensive line.

“Both of them have looked good,” Green said. “Both of them are starters from the last couple of years.”

Green has also been impressed with senior Boone Brecheen, who will play wide receiver on offense.

Allen’s first game of the season will be at 7:30 p.m. September 6th at Tishomingo. However, the Mustangs will have scrimmages against other teams tomorrow, August 23rd , and next Friday, August 30th , both at home.
