Letter to the Editor
We received the following letter this week and wanted to share it with our readers . . .
A couple of issues ago, another subscriber’s (Ron Bullard) paper was sent to me in error. I mailed the paper on to Ron which reminded me how much I look forward to reading his father’s, Wayne Bullard, column, One Pharmacist’s View, each week.
A recent issue brought back memories of growing up in Allen. I was seven years young when I moved to Allen in August 1962, and yes, the water was terrible as Wayne described. We had a couple of generous neighbors, the Hoopers and the Reeves, that would share their wells with my family. I remember listening intently for the “gurgle” as I lowered the metal tube into the well. Sometimes, Bessie Hooper would come out to help me. She could sling that rope around the wooden handle faster than anyone I knew. Every time the well got “stirred up,” I was the one to blame. The bucket was so heavy that half the water had splashed out by the time I got home. I also remember our entire family of 7 drinking from the same dipper that was placed inside the bucket after each use. Just the thought of that today makes me nauseous.
Yes, it was a great day when good water came to Allen, and thank you, Wayne, for all you did to make that happen. Thanks for the memories – good and bad!
Sincerely,
s) Becky Butler Corvallis, Oregon
