Letter to the Editor
To Whom It May Concern,
Wearing a mask in public is not a personal choice. It is a social responsibility. Lame excuses for not wearing abound. “God did not make me with a mask.” God did not make you with a fig leaf (Genesis 3:7) either, but you don’t go out in public without clothes do you?
Not wearing a mask to protect yourself and others from spreading COVID-19 is an obvious indication that the person refusing to wear a mask when in close public contact is suffering from an anti-social personality disorder.
If you think, “Well, I’m not a socialist”, you should open your eyes. The military, police departments, fire departments, schools, the list goes on and on to include the politicians who rail against socialism, are social programs we’ve all paid taxes to support. Conservative government simply means bullets are cheaper than counselors. Are you sure that’s where you want to go?
That’s not a threat, it’s a question paranoiac. (Sorry I had to state that for those whom the label fits.) People once stated, “They can’t make me wear a seatbelt.” “Hurts no one but me.” “It’s a personal choice.” “I’m not having a wreck.”
America is having a COVID-19 wreck. We are not isolated from the rest of the world. When you’re the only one who can be hurt that’s a personal choice. You can infect other even if you don’t feel sick. Masking is a responsibility.
If you’re in a position of authority you’re faced with a dilemma. Concern yourself with the health and safety of your community or the selfish complaints of whiney petulant abused children who have somehow managed to reach to reach physical but not mental maturity.
Rest in Peace, John Robert Oglesbee, M.D.
