Allen Teams head to Area Tournament

The local ladies entered the Class A Regional Tournament in the consolation bracket Saturday afternoon, February 20th, and came out with a first round 43- 31 win over the Stonewall Lady Longhorns. This came after a District loss to Quinton.

Ranked as No. 20, this win raised the Lady Mustangs record to 11-9 and advanced them to play at North Rock Creek on Monday, February 22 nd .

Junior Cheyene McCarn gave her team the first two baskets of the game, a 3-pointer and a long jumper inside. Hannah Harris and Maggie Yarbrough stepped up to add to the lead and Harris’ layup buzzer-beater ended the first quarter with a score of 17-7.

Stonewall’s Kaylee Ford and Faith Ross came back strong in the second quarter cutting the lead to 17-13 before Allen fired back with 11 points, entering the half-time break with a 28-15 lead.

The third quarter saw Stonewall trim the Allen lead but the Lady Mustangs responded and the period ended with 38- 25 on the scoreboard, then finished the game with five more points.

Cheyene McCarn led the Allen offense with 13 points on 4-8 shooting from the field and a pair of free throws. Emily Sells also finished with 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. She also had four steals.

Hannah Harris added nine points, 11 rebounds, three steals, two blocks and three assists.

Sophomore Maggie Yarbrough collected eight points and seven rebounds and earned praise from her coach.

“She’s just a sophomore so she has lots of opportunity to get better. I challenged her a little in practice and told her she was going to have play a big role for us. I’m proud of her,” Coach Dottie Slabaugh said.

The Lady Mustangs battled through the first quarter in Monday’s game against Wister in the second round of Regional play. The February 22 nd game was played at North Rock Creek High School, Shawnee, and improved the local ladies to a 12-9 record.

Senior Hannah Harris exploded for 26 points of the 57-37 win over the Lady Wildcats.

First quarter fouls gave local fans a few tense moments as Hannah and Maggie Yarbrough earned three each. “It was a rough start,” admitted Allen head coach Dottie Slabaugh.

The first quarter ended with just a one point lead, 13-12, but the second quarter was better, ending with Emily Sells’ shot at the buzzer, giving them a 27-18 halftime lead.

Hannah Harris stayed out of foul trouble and came back strong in the second half, ending as high scorer for her team. Emily Sells threw in 17 points and sophomore Macyee Davis ended with 8 points.

“Our seniors seem like they aren’t ready to end their high school basketball careers, Emily and Hannah have been playing with a fire in their eyes, and that has carried over the rest of the team.”

The ladies won their final Regional game Tuesday with a 43-35 victory over the Quinton ladies. They will take to the court against Strother in Area play tonight, Thursday, at 6:00 pm in McLoud before returning to Shawnee for the remainder of the Area tournament.
