A hard fought third game had the Mustangs bringing home the second place trophy Saturday night from the Pottawatomie Tri-County Tournament last week. The tournament was held in the North Rock Creek High School, Shawnee.

After winning the first go-round 54-46 over the Strother Yellowjackets on that Monday, they took on the Wetumka Chieftains Thursday evening for a 70-45 win.

Leading the charge against the Chieftains were Brayden Tatum and Garrett Nix for a combined 56 of the total 70 points. Brayden earned a season high 36 points which included four three-point baskets; Garrett finished at 20 points with three baskets from outside the arc. Will Kaminski was next high sinking three baskets, putting six points on the scoreboard.

Scoring for Allen were Garret Nix, 20; Brayden Tatum, 36; Tagus Howard, 4; Easton Ledo, 2; Will Kaminski, 6; and Jake Beavert, 2.

The win improved the Mustangs records to 9-5 and advanced them into the championship game on Saturday.

Saturday night the Mustangs faced off against Davenport for the title win. The locals took the game into overtime before the 63-53 loss to the undefeated 2021-22 team of Bulldogs.

After a disappointing first quarter the Mustangs went into the halftime locker rooms only two points down, 25-23. It was an even 12-points each third quarter but Allen gained the two points needed in the fourth to take the game into overtime tied at 53. It was a total shutout for the Mustangs in the OT while the Bulldogs added 10 and took home the win.

The Mustangs standing for the season was now 9-6.

Brayden Tatum again led the Mustang scorers with 21 points, including four three-pointers. Garrett Nix followed by adding 17 to the score, 12 coming in the game’s second half. Easton Ledo and Jake Beavert each contributed 6 points; Cayser Nickell, 2; and Tagus Howard, 1.

Tuesday night, the #7 ranked Stuart Hornets came to town and left after a 44-42 squeaker that gave Allen a new record of 10-6. With less than a minute to play and the score tied at 42, Coach Mill called a time out to speak with his team. Whatever he said worked because the final basket fell with just seconds on the clock to give Allen the win.

Scoring were Garrett Nix, 13; Cayser Nickell, 3; Brayden Tatum, 21; Easton Ledo, 4; and Jake Beavert 3.
