Mustangs late rally, comes up short

The Allen Mustangs let Friday night’s game against Stratford get away from them, then rallied late, but came up just short.

Allen lost the game by a score of 35-32.

After a turnover on downs early in the first quarter, Stratford capitalized with a rushing touchdown, then a successful PAT kick, making it 7-0 about two minutes into the game.

But Allen quickly answered on an 80-yard drive which was capped off by a 55-yard touchdown run by quarterback Brayden Tatum.

The score was 8-7, Allen, after a successful two-point conversion.

But after Allen took over on downs on Stratford’s ensuing drive, then were forced to punt, the Bulldogs blocked the punt and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown. The extra point made it 14-8, Stratford.

With a few minutes left in the first quarter, the Mustangs turned the ball over on downs in their own territory and the Bulldogs capitalized with another rushing touchdown to make it 20-8, Stratford. A two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

Allen drew closer with a rushing touchdown on its following drive. The twopoint conversion failed, however, making the score 20-14, Bulldogs.

The Mustangs performed a successful onside kick, then drove the rest of the field for a touchdown on a pass from Tatum to Quinton Walker, knotting the score at 20.

The Bulldogs went on to score seven more points in the second to end the first half at 27-20.

Second Half

Stratford scored eight more points with a few minutes left in the third quarter, which was the only score of the period, to make it 35-20, Bulldogs.

In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs rallied. First, on a drive which began in the third period, and on Allen’s own 20 yard line. The Mustangs drove the field and scored on a 15- yard touchdown pass from Tatum to Walker. The twopoint conversion attempt failed, however.

After the Mustangs recovered a fumble on Stratford’s 46 yard line, they drove the field, and again, scored on a touchdown pass, again from Tatum to Walker. A two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 35-32, Stratford.

The Bulldogs were able to hold onto the ball to end the game.

Brayden Tatum rushed for 122 yards and an touchdown and completed 9 of 15 passes for 90 years and 3 scores. Quinton Walker finished with 6 catches for 74 yards and three touchdowns. Shawn Husband added 69 yards and on TD.

Jacob Hisaw led the defense with 6 tackles followed by Zac Matzkvech with 5. Taylor Woods and Bodrey Goodson each had an interception for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs will travel to Canadian Friday to take on the Cougars for their final non-district game. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

The Cougars are 0-2 on the season, and have only managed to put six points on the scoreboard in those two games.
